Peaky Blinders series five release date revealed as Cillian Murphy and crew return for BBC series

It's been a while since season four of Peaky Blinders aired at the end of 2017, and fans are chomping at the bit for more episodes.

Last season saw the war between the Shelby clan and Italian mobster Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) come to an explosive conclusion, that also saw major casualties on both sides, and a final beach side confrontation between Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and Alfie Solomon (Tom Hardy).

With viewers eager for more, the series is back for another six episodes but with an added injection of political schemes too, as Tommy takes on another fierce opponent - parliament, Belfast Live reports.

So when exactly can we expect the new episodes? And who will be returning for them? Mirror Online has gathered the information we can on the fifth outing for the Birmingham gangsters.

Peaky Blinders season 5 release date

The series is due to return in 2019, and we will probably see the series return in early summer at the earliest.

The grand premiere for the show will be held in Birmingham Town Hall on July 18, 2019.

The BFI Southbank will also be showing a special preview of the first episode on July 23, 2019, so we wouldn't be surprised if the series arrives as early as August. It is now sold out.

The show will, however, be airing on BBC One now, instead of BBC Two, likely due to its global interest.

Fans, flat caps and all, can go and watch the first episode before anyone else there.

They will also feel like a real life celebrity getting the chance to see their show favourites with a spectacular red carpet event.

Tommy's sister has become increasingly involved in her family business, but just how much of a role will she play this time round?

Jack Rowan as Bonnie Gold

Aberama's boxer son will return as another pair of fists for the Peaky Blinders.

Communist activist and lover to Tommy, Jessie helped him win his parliamentary election last season, but will she still be in his camp and his bed this time around?

Also returning are supporting characters Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, Packy Lee as Johnny Dogs, Ian Peck as Curly, Benjamin Zephaniah as Jeremiah Jesus, and Jordan Bolger as Isiah Jesus.

Who isn't coming back?

Gangsters like Jewish kingpin Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy), Tommy's little brother John Shelby (Joe Cole), and violent Italian mobster Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) won't be coming back, as their characters were all killed off in season 4.

Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) and Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) (Robert Viglasky)

Also not expected to return are Tommy's former love interest and racehorse owner May Carleton (Charlotte Riley) and John's embittered gypsy widow Esme Shelby (Aimee-Ffion Edwards).

New cast members

Hunger Games star Sam Claflin will be joining the series as Oswald Mosley, the real-life British politician who would become the infamous leader of the British Union of Fascists.

The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy will also be joining as a feisty new gangster's moll.

Snow White and the Huntsman's Brian Gleeson is also added to the cast, along with Kill List's Neil Maskell, and Game of Thrones star Kate Dickie.

Others to look out for are Hollyoaks star Emmett J Scanlan, Lady Macbeth's Cosmo Jarvis, Charlene McKenna, Andrew Koji, Elliot Cowan, and Vikings' Daryl McCormack.

So quite a few new faces to look forward to!

Peaky Blinders season 5 plot

We don't know a huge amount about the plot for the new series, apart from the fact that it will explore the financial crisis of 1929, along with Tommy's new role as the MP for Birmingham South and how he navigates the political sphere, specifically his relationship with Sam Claflin's character, Oswald Mosley.

Inevitably, these new political connections will have a big effect on the Shelby family as a whole.

How the other new cast members fit in with the series are yet to be seen.

Peaky Blinders returns on BBC One in 2019.
