Peaky Blinders Series 6: Five things we learnt in episode 1 as Tommy 'starts a war'

Peaky Blinders was back with a bang - literally - on Sunday evening and the first episode of season six did not disappoint.

Not only did fans get an update on most of the family, viewers also got some closure on the loss of Helen McCrory - who played Aunt Polly - and a glimpse at a sober Tommy Shelby.

The following article contains spoiler alerts for the first episode of Peaky Blinders season six.

The first instalment of the final season began with Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) trying to console Tommy (Cillian Murphy) as he came to terms with the fact that he may not be able to defeat Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin).

Tommy then attempted to take his own life in the muddy grounds of his estate after hallucinating a visit from his late wife Grace (Annabelle Wallis).

Unbeknownst to him, Arthur had removed all bullets from the gun - and Tommy lived to see another day and went about business as usual.

Here's five things we learnt from Peaky Blinders Series 6 Episode 1...

Tommy Shelby is sober

(BBC)

It's the day we never thought would come, but Tommy Shelby has gone teetotal.

Viewers were shocked when they heard the gangster refuse a glass of whiskey as he revealed he'd given up alcohol four years ago - following the death of his Aunt Polly.

During one particularly tense scene, Tommy told a group of French men: "I will not drink your toast because four years ago I swore off alcohol.

"Since I swore off alcohol, I've become a calmer and more peaceful person... but sometimes, in moments of personal conflict, I can resort to my old ways," he added whilst brandishing his gun.

It's unsure if Tommy will stick to his booze-free lifestyle throughout the entire season, or if the drama to come will push him over the edge and towards a bottle.

Arthur has lost control

Tommy's brother Arthur is struggling with drug addiction and appears to have lost control (BBC)

Tommy's hot-headed brother Arthur didn't feature too heavily in the first episode of season six, but when he did, he didn't look great.

Apart from the opening scene, which was set four years prior, Arthur wasn't sober - far from it.

Not only was Arthur supposed to be entertaining the kids at Christmas as Santa Claus, he was also tasked with bringing everyone's presents - but instead he was drunk on the stairs.

A scene later on in the episode revealed that Arthur had actually been taking drugs - and clearly has an addiction problem.

It's unsure what the future will hold for Arthur, but Tommy has already threatened dealers not to sell to his brother anymore, so hopefully he can get him back on the straight and narrow.

Aunt Polly was murdered

Episode one confirmed that Aunt Polly had been murdered following the attempt on Oswald Mosley's life (BBC)

Following the death of actress Helen McCrory in April 2021, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight wrote her character Aunt Polly out - and paid tribute to her perfectly.

Unfortunately for Tommy, it seems that Aunt Polly was simply collateral damage for some of the decisions he made on the night he attempted to have Oswald Mosley killed.

Episode one saw Tommy receive a phone call from an Irish woman who informed him that three bodies were being dropped outside his home so that he could "send them to heaven".

She continued: "We've made some changes to the structure of your organisation," as Tommy began opening the body bags.

"Ever since you began to build your empire, you've had a crutch to lean on... last night we kicked away that crutch. From now on it will be us that you lean on.

"Please be aware Mr Shelby that the deaths of your people are your own responsibility because you consistently fail to understand your own limitations," she added before hanging up the phone.

Judging by Tommy's devastated reaction, Aunt Polly was in the third and final body bag, and the following scene showed him and the rest of the family cremating her body and her caravan.

Gina has a soft spot for Tommy

Gina Gray clearly has a soft spot for Tommy Shelby but it's unsure if she will give in to his charm (BBC)

Michael Gray's wife Gina (Anna Taylor-Joy) came face-to-face with Tommy during his trip to America, and despite there being some cross words between the pair, there was also plenty of chemistry.

At one point Gina said flirtatiously: "In England when someone gets this close to Tommy Shelby it's, 'Oh the horror' or the desire to fall on your knees, open your mouth and say, 'yes sir, please sir'."

Gina then attempted to have the upper hand and told Tommy there would be no deal going ahead with her uncle Jack, but it fell on deaf ears as Tommy revealed he'd set up Michael and landed him in prison.

"My message to your uncle is this: If he doesn't wanna buy my opium, I will sell to the east Boston Jews," Tommy threatened as Gina replied: "Oh baby, do you want to start a f*cking war?"

Later on in the episode, Tommy was seen taunting Michael about Gina's upcoming visit to London as he hinted he'll be seeing her and will be "happy to show her the sights".

Michael was absolutely fuming at the thought of Tommy getting close to Gina, but will she succumb to his charm or will she stay loyal to her husband?

Michael Gray wants revenge

Michael Gray clearly wants to get revenge on Tommy for a variety of reasons (BBC)

Michael Gray has made no secret of the fact that he wants to get revenge on Tommy Shelby - and seems hellbent on pulling the trigger himself.

Michael blames Tommy for the death of his mother Polly and feels that he owes it to her to get back at him for her murder.

As they cremated Polly, Michael was heard saying: "Mum, it was the ambitions and strategies of one man that caused this.

"And I swear in the name of almighty God, no matter what it takes, no matter how many lies I have to tell, I will take revenge on Tommy Shelby."

During a scene towards the end of the episode, Michael appeared to threaten Tommy when he visited him in prison.

"You're dead Tommy, you're out of your f*cking depth. You're dead already," he told him, before adding: "When my mother died at the hands of your ambition, you didn't learn your limitations."

Tommy sarcastically replied: "I have no limitations," before walking off.

Peaky Blinders continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
