Peaky Blinders film: When is the movie and how will it follow on from season 6?

Peaky Blinders may have come to an end following the release of season 6 episode 6 but it is definitely not the end for the Shelby family. While there will not be another series of the popular Birmingham-based drama, Peaky Blinders is moving to the big screen.

The series, which first kicked off in 2013, aired its final episode on Sunday, April 3 on BBC One. It saw Tommy Shelby survive after finding out his doctor had deceived him and he wasn't suffering from tuberculoma, as well as avoiding a trap laid out by his revenge-seeking nephew Michael Gray. The ending was dubbed emotional and satisfying by viewers, but many are wondering what will happen next. It comes after creator Steven Knight confirmed in January 2021 there would be a film to conclude the epic story.

When asked if season 6 was the end of Peaky, Cillian Murphy, who plays Tommy Shelby, said: "I think Steve has always had an endgame in mind. Covid screwed that up a bit. But now he's got lots of plans to make a film. So I don't think this is the end of the story. I think it's probably just the end of the story in this form. But Steve is always bringing up ideas. And they're always good. So I'll just wait and see what he has to say."

When will the Peaky Blinders movie be released?

There is no official release date for the Peaky Blinders film at the moment. However, it has been widely reported that production on the film will begin at the start of 2023.

It has also been confirmed that both Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson will reprise their roles as Tommy and Arthur in the spin-off movie. While Stephen Knight also told Digital Spy that "so many great actors" are in conversation for the film.

As for the plot, not much has been given away other than it will be will set during the Second World War. Stephen told RadioTimes: "I know what's going to happen in those stories and it's about a sort of untold story that happened in the Second World War, which Peakys are going to be involved in."
