Peaky Blinders fans in the US need subtitles to understand Brummie accents

US fans of BBC hit Peaky Blinders are so baffled by the Brummie accents they have to watch it with subtitles, according to the show’s boss.

Steven Knight says even the actors still struggle with the accent despite reaching Season Five of the hit programme, which airs later this summer.

He said: “It’s tricky sometimes because the accents are difficult to get, but we are getting there now.”

Knight added: “It’s quite funny that in the United States quite a lot of people watch it with subtitles on.”

He also said he was open to Line of Duty actress Vicky McClure having a role. She recently revealed she had auditioned for “every series” without getting picked.

“I was surprised,” he said. “I’ve worked with her and I think she is brilliant. She would be great.”

Knight was promoting a new Peaky Blinders festival in September, featuring bands including Primal Scream playing across five stages. There will also be live enactments of scenes from the show.

John Empson, festival director, said the event would also feature cinema, theatre, ballet and appearances by cast members and special guests.

The Legitimate Peaky Blinders Festival is on September 14 and 15.

Tickets on sale August 9 at 10am.
