Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight to explore the history of the SAS in new BBC drama

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will return to the BBC with a new historical drama about the SAS, the broadcaster has confirmed.

SAS: Rogue Heroes has been described as an origin story for the British Special Forces unit, adapted from Ben Macintyre’s bestselling book of the same name.

Macintyre’s book charted the founding of the unit in 1941, along with the rise of a new kind of British combat that initially earned opposition from many within the British High Command.

“This will be a secret history telling the story of exceptional soldiers who decided battles and won wars only to then disappear back into the shadows,” Knight said in a statement. “We will shine a light on remarkable true events informed by the people who shaped them.”

Piers Wenger, controller of BBC Drama, added: “SAS: Rogue Heroes will lift the lid on the origins of one of Britain’s most iconic institutions and explore the characters, courage and flaws of the men involved with all of the honesty and swagger we have come to expect from Steve.”

The BBC declined to confirm when SAS: Rogue Heroes will likely be broadcast, but did confirm that casting will be announced soon.
