Peaky Blinders' Cillian Murphy makes Tommy confession and talks 'crazy' fans

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy commented on the iconic aesthetic of character Tommy Shelby ahead of the new series of the show and discussed his “crazy” fans.

As fans of the Birmingham-based gang drama eagerly await the return of its sixth and final series, the 45-year-old actor said there was one element of his character he was not keen to get back to.

While Tommy’s short back and sides undercut exploded in popularity since the show hit screens in 2013, the Irish actor says he’s not a fan of the haircut.

The actor told Woman and Home: “People ask for a Peaky cut. It's crazy that people like it - it hasn't grown on me.”

The actor has even taken a blunt swipe at the “hipsters and fashionistas” obsessed with the haircut in the past, previously adding that the close shave gets him hassle on the street.

“It’s when you get the haircut that people start shouting at you,” he said. “When I don’t have the haircut I can get the bus quite unmolested.”

However, despite the Peaky Blinders star’s thoughts on the look, fans of the hit BBC series have given the style of the drama a life of its own.

David Beckham reportedly loved the look of the show so much that he approached the showrunners to discuss a Peaky Blinders-inspired clothing range.

The show's creator Steven Knight explained: “David is a big fan, so is his son, and they approached us and said they wanted to do a Peaky Blinders capsule range.

“By the end of series four it became very obvious around the world there was a thing happening. That is when we started looking at a full range of products.”

With filming slowed by Covid measures, fans are ready to welcome the long-awaited season six after months of delays.

But the late Helen McCrory, who played matriarch Polly Gray on the BBC drama, will be tragically absent from the drama after she lost her private battle to cancer last year.

Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle has opened up about filming a tribute to Helen in the upcoming final season of the show.

Sophie, 33, who plays Ada Shelby in the crime drama, has said that filming the sixth season without Helen “felt wrong” as she detailed the show’s tribute to the Harry Potter actress.

She told the Radio Times: “It was a devastating thing for all of us.

“We'd all been in that same boat for ten years and for her to not be there, it all felt off-kilter and wrong.”

Sophie continued: “So in the tribute, that's all real, that emotion. It really was a moment to think about her and what she had been.

“And this show wouldn't have been what it is without her, I really believe that. I really believe that she was fundamental to making Peaky what it is and elevating it to be more than just the script, so it was a huge loss and it was just incredibly sad.”

Peaky Blinders season six will hit screens on Sunday 27th February.
