Employees at Matsuo Ceramics Inc., a manufacturer of Banko ware pottery in Komono, Mie Prefecture, are busy preparing for the peak season of their pig-shaped mosquito coil holders, including by applying ceramic glaze to the popular products.
While the holders for mosquito coils, which contain incense that repels mosquitoes, have gained popularity among foreign tourists as pieces of interior decor, demand has dropped steeply due to the coronavirus outbreak. Production is predicted at only 2,000 holders ― roughly two-thirds of a typical year's production.
"Now that the state of emergency has been lifted, even if it's only in spirit, we'd like to continue optimistically," said company president Tetsuya Matsuo.
The production peak is set to last until mid-June and each holder sells for roughly 3,000 yen-4,000 yen.
