'Peak Newcastle': United fans react to Steve Bruce's 'goalscorer' comments on Joelinton

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce has admitted club record signing Joelinton is not a natural goalscorer.

The Brazilian forward arrived on Tyneside with a £40 million pricetag from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the summer, but has so far struggled to find his feet in English football.

Joelinton has netted just three times in black and white, with his winner at Tottenham in August the sole strike in the Premier League so far.

Speaking ahead of the Magpies trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday on the back of the humbling defeat at Arsenal, Bruce re-iterated his belief the 23-year-old will come good at St James' Park.

However, he added the forward lacks the 'selfish' goalscoring instinct that defines the great strikers.

Bruce said: "The great strikers, the goalscorers, all they're interested in is scoring a goal - Joe is not like that. He is more a team player.

"He has to be a bit more selfish.

"He has to think about himself more and score a goal. He doesn't get himself in the positions enough, that's something we're working on.

"But you can put on as many finishing drills as you want, unfortunately Joe will be measured by one thing - goals."

The comments have provoked discussion on social media among Magpies' supporters, with many questioning the decision to splash the cash on a number nine who does not fit the role.

Others criticised Bruce for making the comments about a young player struggling with confidence, stressing United's current attacking woes stretch beyond their number nine.

Here's how Newcastle United fans reacted to Bruce's admission about the club's record signing:

'Must be the lad's fault'

'Damning'

'Hang him out to dry'

Why didn't he ask for one?

'What is the point?'

'Peak NUFC'

'Wow'
