Thousands of Brisbane rail commuters faced a chaotic trip home on Tuesday evening with a points issue at Roma Street Station causing delays of up to 45 minutes.
Delays have since eased, with a Queensland Rail spokesman saying staff were working to determine how the points were damaged.
"At the moment our key priority is ensuring that we get our customers home so we apologise for the delays we have got at the moment and [are] keeping our work crews on site safe and moving the trains," spokesman Nick King said.
"These are not things that we want to experience … we're learning from everyone. We are striving to put the railway right."
He said crews would be working on the railway all night to recover the network for the morning.
"We will investigate the exact cause of the combination of probably mechanical and human error and recover from that tomorrow morning," he said.
RACQ's Lauren Ritchie said it was likely traffic would be impacted as commuters sought alternative routes home.
"This signal outage couldn't have come at a worse time. Many will be forced onto buses or take an Uber or taxi," Ms Ritchie said.
"We urge all road users to be patient and keep their cool. Everyone is in the same situation and wants to get home as quickly as possible."
