Peacock: Battlestar Galactica reboot from Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail to debut on Universal streaming service

Acclaimed series 'Battlestar Galactica' was originally rebooted in 2004 ( Syfy )

Universal’s new streaming service will be spearheaded by a brand new reboot of the Battlestar Galactica reboot.

The new series is being devised by Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr Robotand director of all 10 episodes of Homecoming, the Amazon show starring Julia Roberts.

No details are known about the project, although rumours of a revival have circulated for years now. Following the news, Esmail promised fans it would be a “new story within the mythology” of the series.

Battlestar Galactica, which tracks the remainder of humanity on the run through space from a race of killer robots – was first rebooted back in 2004 and had an acclaimed run for five seasons on Syfy.

It starred Edward James Olmos, Katee Sackhoff, Mary McDonnell and Jamie Bamber. The original series aired in 1978.

Mr Robot fans will no doubt be intrigued by Esmail’s decision. With the fourth and final season of the Rami Malek-starring drama set to return next month, Esmail is clearly setting his sights on future projects.

He won’t be returning to direct the second season of Homecoming, which will star Janelle Monáe and Chris Cooper.

Peacock will launch in April 2020 with a reboot of Saved by the Bell and an adaptation of Brave New World starring Demi Moore.

It’ll also be home to sitcoms Cheers, Frasier, 30 Rock and The Office US.
