Peace offering: Minerva protects Pax from Mars (Peace and War) by Peter Paul Rubens

Peace and War by Peter Paul Rubens
The debonair Rubens was not only a brilliant painter of baroque opulence, but an eloquent diplomat. He painted this in Britain, where he had been sent by the king of Spain to negotiate peace with Charles I. It is a visual argument for peace. War, personified as the god Mars, is desperate to wreak havoc, but he is held back. The fruits of peace – literally, luscious fruits – are enjoyed by children who would be among war’s victims. Rubens gave this painting to Charles I as a gift with a powerful anti-war message Illustration: guardian.co.uk
