PD Ports has completed its latest investment at the Groveport facility on the River Trent.
A £500,000 new quayside transit warehouse has been unveiled, providing an interim location for weather-sensitive cargo to be held, allowing faster turnaround of vessels on the Humber tributary just west of Scunthorpe.
It will help customers reduce costs, with the fertiliser and steel sectors highlighted as ideal users of the 10,000 sq ft addition.

PD’s chief commercial officer, Geoff Lippitt, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this new facility that will directly benefit multiple valued customers at Groveport and further demonstrates our on-going commitment to providing unparalleled levels of service without compromising on sustainability.
“Working in partnership with our customers, we have been able to provide a solution that will save time and money whilst increasing efficiencies and, most importantly, offer an effective solution for handling their cargo.
“This new investment forms part of our wider plans to diversify the cargos we currently handle and will make Groveport a highly attractive option for businesses dealing with weather-sensitive products.”
The transit warehouse will maximise efficiency of ship-to-shore cranes with protection afforded before transportation to a main warehousing facility on the wider site.
It follows investment in a new crane to speed up the process and the 2019 delivery of a multi-million pound steel handling facility.
One customer benefiting from the addition is All Steels Trading, for its steel hollow imports.
Managing director, Laurence McDougall, said: “The proximity of this large quayside warehouse, immediately adjacent to the berth, has significantly improved discharge speeds and, with vessel availability being so tight in the current market, off-loading speeds have never been so important.
“The introduction of this new facility has certainly helped to strengthen PD Ports, and Groveport’s, reputation in the market as a company making investments to advance its infrastructure to the benefit of its steel trading tenants and their supply chains.”
