PCSO thrown from the bonnet of moving car while trying to stop criminal

A PSCO was thrown from the bonnet of a moving car by a disqualified driver who was trying to evade arrest, a court has heard.

Kristian Lee Trumper was a banned driver when he was spotted behind the wheel of a car by an eagle-eyed PSCO.

But the officer's attempt to stop Trumper ended in dramatic fashion when he was knocked onto the bonnet of the vehicle and carried down the road.

Swansea Crown Court heard the 32-year-old has a history of drink-driving and dangerous and careless driving and has been described as a "danger to the public" by a judge.

Former Welsh Guardsman went on 12-hour drinking binge at rugby club then killed teenager in 90mph crash

On March 30 two police community support officers were on foot patrol in Herbert Street in Pontardawe when a blue Volvo C30 car pulled up and parked.

Ian Ibrahim, prosecuting, said the driver got out of the car and walked into a nearby barbershop.

PSCO Zakary Bird recognised the driver as Trumper - a man he believed to be disqualified.

The court heard the officer made checks on the driver's status on the police computer and called for warranted officers to attend the scene.

Around 25 minutes later Trumper emerged from the barbers and got into his car.

Mr Ibramin said the PCSOs approached the car and told their suspect to stop.

But Trumper started the engine and began to "edge" his way out of the parking space - making contact with PCSO Bird's legs.

Despite being told to stop, Trumper continued to pull out - with police describing his eyes as "bulging" with anger.

He then then knocked the officer onto the bonnet of the Volvo and drove off along Herbert Street, carrying the PCSO for some 30 or 40 feet before breaking and causing the officer to fall off before driving away.

The court heard the PCSO suffered a severe strain to his shoulder in the incident and needed physio.

Trumper later handed himself in to Swansea Central police station on April 1.

The court heard he has eight convictions for 25 offences including three for drink-driving, dangerous driving, careless driving, failing to stop after an accident, aggravated vehicle taking, and perverting the course of justice.

A dangerous driving conviction from 2009 saw him speed through Morriston at 70mph forcing other vehicles to take evasive action, and going through a red traffic light.

David Singh, for Trumper, said the defendant had "panicked" when approached by the PCSOs because he knew he should not be behind the wheel and made the "ludicrous" decision to drive off.

He said it was fortunate that the injuries suffered by the PCSO had not been more serious.

Mr Singh added that the defendant was a dad-of-one who worked as a plumber.

Trumper,of Heol y Gors, Cwmgors, Ammanford , admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after an accident which caused personal injury.

Judge Keith Thomas said he was satisfied that the defendant had been under the influence of either drink or drugs on the day in question.

He told the defendant: "You are a danger to the public when behind the wheel of a car."

Trumper was given a 12 month prison sentence and was also banned from driving for three years. He must also pass an extended driving test before he can get his licence back.

Speaking after the sentencing, South Wales Police chief inspector Mathew Lewis said assaults of any kind on officers would not be tolerated.

He said: "We welcome the outcome from the court today.

"It was very fortunate in this incident the PCSO was not injured more seriously in this incident.

"Our officers and PCSOs come to work to protect member so the public and assaults of any form against them will not be tolerated."
