PCSO saved man's life after he fell from bridge onto Peaky Blinders film set

A brave PCSO jumped into action to save a man's life after he fell from a Stockport bridge, landing on the Peaky Blinders film set.

The man, in his 60s, was seriously injured after falling onto Mersey Square, which had been cordoned off for filming.

PCSO Norman Smith was first on the scene and 'stepped up to the plate' under immense pressure, his proud boss said.

He staunched the bleeding from the man's head wound until paramedics arrived.

Stockport Insp Alex Taylor said PCSO Smith's swift response helped saved the man's life.

The incident happened on January 9. Filming for the period drama at Stockport Plaza was stopped shortly after the incident.

"It happened right in front of him. He attended to him straight away. The ambulance crew got there quite quickly," Stockport inspector Alex Taylor said.

The man was taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

PCSO Smith received an award from the District Superintendent for his actions, along with PCs Oliver Garner and Steven Reed.

Insp Taylor said he was 'incredibly proud'.

He said: "Norman held the fallen man’s head and staunched the significant bleeding from his head wound until the ambulance crew arrived a short time later.

"It was quite dramatic for him really. It's a significant emotional event.
