PCR tests were unavailable in Liverpool and rest of UK for hours

People were unable to book a PCR test anywhere across the city region this morning.

When trying to book a PCR test via the Government's website earlier today, no test sites were available in the North West of England.

Further afield, there were also no available sites to book at PCR test across the whole of the UK.

While all sites in the country are now available again, the only available sites to book a PCR on the morning of December 29 were in Wales and Scotland.

Home testing kits were also unavailable to order for the general public.

The Government’s website outlines that home testing kits are prioritised for essential workers, including NHS staff and social workers.

However, they were also not available to be ordered by essential workers.

The general public and essential workers can again order home testing kits from the Government’s website following the hours they were unable to.

Current guidance requires anyone displaying Covid-19 symptoms to isolate immediately and confirm their result via a PCR test sent out by post.

The inability to book a PCR test will have been compounded by worries over potential Lateral Flow Test shortages.

In Liverpool, test centres remain in operation with mobile test sites placed across the city.

However people have reported low levels of stock for Lateral Flow Tests in pharmacies across the region.

It is currently not possible to order Lateral Flow Tests by post from the Government website.

More people without symptoms are attempting to get tested during the Christmas period.

Yesterday, A record 117,093 cases were reported in England.

Speaking on Twitter this morning, one user, Daisy, said: “No PCR test bookings available ANYWHERE in England online at present. How are infections to be counted accurately?

Available bookings for PCR tests in Merseyside became available again shortly after midday today, with many users experiencing hours of disruption.
