PCR tests for travel could be scrapped by October half term

The government announced an overhaul of its travel restrictions last week.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps detailed how traffic travel light system rules are set to be relaxed into a simpler form next month.

One of the major changes from the update was that fully vaccinated travellers will soon be able to use a cheaper lateral flow test instead of a PCR version for their day-two test.

Mr Shapps confirmed today that no date has been set yet for the removal of PCR testing.

But he told the Commons Transport Select Committee that the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is "aware" of calls for this to be introduced for the October half-term.

He said: "It's clear the range of measures I introduced this week and last week are going to make a big difference and people will be able to travel much more freely.

"Part of that is the removal of the PCR test on day two and replacing it with a much simpler lateral flow test.

He continued: "They (DHSC) are aware of half-term and are working closely with the private-sector providers to ensure we can do this as quickly as possible."

Eight countries were cut from the red list today which means UK jet setters will be able to travel to hotspots such as Turkey without having to quarantine in a managed hotel at a huge cost.

The amber list is set to be axed altogether from October 4 when it will be replaced with two categories - the red list and the rest of the world.

Mr Shapps said in a statement after he announced the new restrictions last week that the rule changes will provide a boost for the travel industry.

He said: "Today's changes mean a simpler, more straightforward system. One with less testing and lower costs, allowing more people to travel, see loved ones or conduct business around the world while providing a boost for the travel industry.

" Public health has always been at the heart of our international travel policy and with more than eight in 10 adults fully vaccinated in the UK, we are now able to introduce a proportionate updated structure that reflects the new landscape."
