Covid PCR test result delays 'resolved' and should return to normal

In recent weeks, people have been testing more regularly in a bid to ensure they are covid free before meeting up with other households during the festive period.

However as a result, hundreds of Glaswegians have been complaining that they have had to wait longer than usual for their PCR test results - with many not hearing back within the three day window period.

Nurses are among those affected by the delay with one reader telling us in our comment section that she was waiting six days to get her results.

A similar comment also appeared with one saying: "I know two nurses who tested last Thursday morning (December 23). Have had to chase up results and waited until today to finally get results. Thankfully negative but they've lost days working on our wards which are buckling due to so many waiting unnecessary extended waiting times for results."

In addition to this, many people have taken to social media after being told their results were "lost" however the Scottish Government have said that they are "not aware of any issues with test results being lost" but encouraged people to contact the helpline if they do not receive results within 72 hours.

Discussing the issue with Gary Robertson on Good Morning Scotland, National Clinical Director Professor Jason Leitch apologised for the delays but has said that test result waiting times should return to normal with results aiming to be sent back to individuals between 24 and 36 hours.

He said: "It has just been big because quite a lot of people went for testing before Christmas, in order to try and get Christmas celebrations that were safe if they had symptoms or it they were contacted.

"I apologise for that, I am sorry if people had to wait a little bit longer. We think the acute problem, the immediate problem is resolved.

"My understanding was, yesterday (December 27) speaking to test and protect leaders, that the backlog was cleared and they were back to somewhere between 24 and 36 hours for pretty much all the tests.

"Postal ones take a bit longer just because it takes a while to get through the mail and back.

"Fundamentally, yes, if there is a massive increase in PCR testing, then you do have to make some choices about prioritisation, about high-risk individuals and locations, but we are not at that stage yet."
