The widow of Pc Andrew Harper today said “everything in my life is different now” as she campaigned for a new law meaning those who kill emergency workers are jailed for life.

Lissie Harper also said she was “pretty appalled” that Pc Harper’s three killers are appealing after their manslaughter convictions.

She said: “There isn’t a deterrent for these people. They think they can go out and commit crime and take people’s lives and that’s acceptable. It’s not to the rest of us. We’re dis gusted by that sort of behaviour.”

She was speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain as more than 650,000 signatures backed Harper’s Law, an online petition calling for tougher sentences.

Mrs Harper had been married to her 28-year-old husband for just four weeks when he was dragged behind a car and killed responding to a late-night burglary in August last year.

Mrs Harper, who is due to meet with Home Secretary Priti Patel this month for talks, said: “Losing someone in that way, you can never prepare yourself for.

"This [campaign] has given something that maybe I can have some control over. I have an immense amount of support. Everything in my life is different now and I’ve got to find a new purpose.”
