Payouts to teachers injured while working in Scots schools 'down by more than £500,000'

Payouts to teachers injured while working in Scottish schools fell by more than £500,000 this year, figures reveal.

One was given £38,777 – the largest award secured by the EIS teaching union in 2021 – after being seriously injured in a classroom attack.

A total of 18 EIS members were awarded £167,685 – a massive drop on the 2020 figure of £700,000.

Most payouts were for accidents, including £14,137 to a teacher after they opened a door which hit another door, causing a shoulder injury.

EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said: “Teaching professionals should have the right to expect a safe working place and to be properly supported by employers.”
