Payback time for man who stole from dementia sufferers he was meant to care for

A thief who stole tens of thousands of pounds from elderly people he was supposed to be looking after has been ordered to pay more than £130,000 back.

Adam Ahmad, 29, worked as a carer providing support in the homes of his six elderly, 'vulnerable' victims.

But last year, after befriending them, he stole their bank cards and withdrew a total of £25,000.

He spent the money on his mortgage, council tax, credit card bills and even his gym membership.

Four of the people he targeted were suffering from Alzheimer's or dementia, another had a brain injury whilst the sixth had poor memory and physical injuries, a court heard last year.

In June 2019, Ahmad, of London Road South, Stockport, was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to nine counts of fraud by false representation, seven counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of false imprisonment.

While his crimes were being investigated, an investigation into Ahmad's assets was launched. A court then granted an order under the Proceeds of Crime Act to freeze them.

Today (November 27), a judge at Minshull Street Crown Court ruled that Ahmad had 'benefited from his criminal lifestyle'.

A confiscation order of £131,170.24 was made.

Some of this money taken from Ahmad will compensate his victims.

Financial Investigator Mark Chesters of GMP's Stockport District said: "Ahmad preyed on vulnerable people in society and didn't think twice about the impact this would have on their lives.

"I hope today's results provide a sense of justice and closure for them.

"I hope this case also sends a stark warning to anyone considering funding their lifestyle through criminal behaviour - not only will we do everything in our power to secure a conviction but we will also ensure you have to pay back every penny of ill-gotten gains."
