'Pay your workers' – Vandals target Wetherspoon's pub in Shawlands

Vandals have graffitied a Wetherspoon’s pub urging the chain’s boss Tim Martin to pay his workers.

Members of the public saw the messages scrawled on the shuttered entrance of the Sir John Stirling Maxwell pub in Shawlands this morning.

People used spray paint to write ‘Pay Up Tim’and ‘Pay Your Workers’ on the bar on Kilmarnock Road.

The messages come in the light of other graffitied messages which have been left on branches in London.

The graffiti comes just a few days after the chain’s founder Tim Martin told staff to “go work at Tesco” instead as the pubs warned them they could face delay over payment.

The company, which employees 40,000 people, shut all its pubs on Friday after Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered all pubs to shut until further notice.

Mr Martin originally said he thought his pubs could remain open amid fears that social drinkers could be spreading Coronavirus by meeting in large numbers in public spaces.

He said his company will pay employees for all work done until the pubs opened last opened but will not make any further payment to staff until the government fulfils its promise to cover 80 per cent of the wages of workers affected by Covid 19.

However, Mr Martin later changed his position amid public outcry.

A spokesman for Wetherspoons said: “No one has the right to to graffiti our property. This does not help the situation in anyway.

“We have made it clear that all staff will be paid.”

It is not known when the messages were posted or if the police are investigating but the force has been contacted for comment.
