Pavel Safranko wanted for Dundee United return as Micky Mellon's men begin loan talks

Dundee United have made a move to try and re-sign Pavol Safranko.

United want to land the striker from Sepsi OSK on loan.

The Slovakian international had a successful loan spell at Tannadice back in the 2018-19 season.

The all-action frontman established himself as a firm favourite with the United support and is known to be keen on the return.

United sporting director Tony Asghar has opened talks with his Romanian club to try and see if a deal can be done.

The 25-year-old scored 12 goals at Tannadice when he was on loan from Danish side Aalborg.

He then moved to Romania to work under former United boss Csaba Laszlo.

Safranko has a £750,000 release clause and a permanent deal is unlikely unless Sepsi's asking price is significantly cut.

Boss Micky Mellon is actively trying to strengthen his frontline and has been impressed with scout reports and previous footage of Safranko.

Mellon also believes the Slovak would fit into the structure of his United side and the way he wants them to play.

Ipswich Town striker James Norwood is another option that remains very much active.

Norwood previously played for Mellon at Tranmere but the wages in that deal are proving an obstacle.

United have been hampered by an ankle injury to Scotland international Lawrence Shankland.

That has meant Nicky Clark and young Louis Appere have had to take the burden of the striking positions on their Premiership return.
