Paulo Fonseca will benefit from the unusual nature of Tottenham's pre-season this summer

Paulo Fonseca is set to be announced as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur within the next week and he will be looking to get his ideas across quickly this summer.

The 48-year-old Portuguese is coming into a new-look structure at the club with Fabio Paratici announced on Saturday as Spurs' managing director of football.

Unlike a traditional manager, in this continental structure Fonseca's head coach role will see him handed a simple brief - to coach and develop the players and lead them to success on the pitch - while Paratici deals with all of the off the pitch aspects of recruitment, contracts and much more across the club.

Fonseca's backroom staff are currently being finalised as he and the club build a new coaching set-up around him, with new faces in particular focused on defensive aspects. Some of the his long-time regular coaches have in the past month set off on new challenges of their own.

The Mozambique-born head coach will be keen to get to work with his new players and coaches as quickly as possible and the indifferent season Spurs had last time out will in turn present him with a bigger group to work with when pre-season begins next month.

In previous years, Tottenham have had plenty of representatives at summer tournaments and that has meant staggered returns for key players and some subsequent pre-season training camps packed with fringe players and academy products.

However, with players such as Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Steven Bergwijn, Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Eric Dier all having seen their hopes of heading to the Euros dashed, those six will all be part of pre-season.

In fact, Fonseca could potentially only be missing Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Lloris, Moussa Sissoko, Joe Rodon and Ben Davies who are at the Euros, as well as Giovani Lo Celso and Davinson Sanchez who are on Copa America duty.

Some of those players will be back sooner than others depending on their nation's progress in their respective competitions.

Paratici is already working hard on shaping Fonseca's squad for him and there will be an emphasis on getting unwanted players out of the door quickly in order to raise funds to bring new signings through it.

Tottenham have a habit of leaving their transfer dealing until later in the window and this year brings the return of the closure of the window after the season has begun.

However, the club moved quickly last summer to tie up some earlier deals for Jose Mourinho and Paratici needs to do that again this time around in order for Fonseca to be able to get his methods and philosophy across to as many players as possible as quickly as possible.

Spurs could yet decide to head off on a pre-season trip abroad for a game or two, depending on what lucrative offers come their way and also whether international travel for elite sports people allows.

Their local rivals Arsenal are scheduled to play in Orlando in July as well as taking some training time in Scotland beforehand on top of a hoped for warm-weather camp abroad.

Both Spurs and the Gunners have also been involved in talks over a three-team London mini-friendly tournament at their respective stadiums with Chelsea, which will raise money for charities in the capital.

Fonseca and Paratici will decide upon what form Tottenham's pre-season takes but there will be some kind of team bonding involved, whether it involves a short stay abroad or even the players and staff simply spending time at The Lodge together at Hotspur Way.

Circumstances this summer will make it 'the more the merrier' in terms of players available for Fonseca and his coaching staff to work with and that will be an advantage he will grab with both hands as looks to get his ideas across as quickly as possible before the new Premier League season begins.
