Paulo Fonseca scraps planned speaking event as Newcastle owners get ready to make big call

Paulo Fonseca has pulled out of a planned speaking event in Lisbon tomorrow as the Newcastle owners gear up to make a big call.

The former AS Roma coach was due to speak at the Web Summit Sportstrade conference in Lisbon but has pulled out on the eve of the event.

Fonseca has been one of the frontrunners for the vacant managerial position at Newcastle following Steve Bruce's departure.

The Magpies new owners have hinted at 'positive change' on the horizon as they gear up to appoint Bruce's successor.

The last minute cancellation also coincides with the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham Hotspur.

Fonseca was interviewed by Daniel Levy last summer and was set to take over in London before a last minute change of plan, which saw the former Wolves boss appointed.

The 48-year-old has been linked with the hotseat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium once again.

However, the cancellation of the event could be coincidental, with Antonio Conte in London for discussions with Spurs.

He's been widely tipped to become the new man at the helm ahead of Spurs Europa Conference League game against Vitesse.

Newcastle are expected to make a managerial appointment ahead of the international break, but the drubbing against Chelsea this weekend may have forced the new owners hands to speed up the process.

Amanda Staveley was in attendance as the Blues made like work of the Magpies, who are now six points adrift from safety.

Fonseca was the bookmakers favourite to take over at St. James' Park following talks with the club, and is awaiting a call from the club to accept a contract offer.

The Toon hierarchy wanted to consider a number of managers before making an appointment and Fonseca has been made to wait to find out his fate.
