Paulo Fonseca keen on Newcastle United job after interview

Paulo Fonseca is hoping to agree a deal with Newcastle United after further talks with the Magpies today.

Sources close to the former Porto and AS Roma boss are claiming Fonseca is eager to become the next boss at St James' Park and replace Steve Bruce.

Fonseca is keen to taste life in the Premier League after believing he'd netted the job at Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

However, a late change in thinking from Daniel Levy resulted in them opting for Nuno Santo.

Fonseca has been playing the waiting game to an extent after speaking to Amanda Staveley remotely but with the Toon consortium waiting for consultation with Yasir Al-Rumayyan in Saudi Arabia, Newcastle hope to announce their new boss soon.

Newcastle have been talking to other candidates including Roberto Martinez and Eddie Howe.

But Fonseca hopes he has won the race to be new Toon boss.

United announced their media call for Friday afternoon at 1.30pm with coach and caretaker boss Graeme Jones.

If the pace of the Fonseca deal continues, he could be in the stands at Crystal Palace on Saturday but the usual formalities are not sealed just yet.

The Magpies have not commented publicly today but said after Bruce left a replacement would be named in "due course".
