Paulo Fonseca has been told who should be his first signing as Tottenham head coach

Former White Hart Lane favourite, Paul Robinson, believes that Milan Skriniar could be the answer to all of Tottenham’s defensive problems.

The Slovakian scored the winning goal with a smart finish from inside the box as his country beat Poland 2-1 on Monday to move to the top of Group E, but Robinson has praised the centre-back’s defensive qualities, and has urged Tottenham to go back in for him, after failing to sign him twelve months ago.

football.london reported in March that the north London club are on the hunt for a central defender with leadership qualities after there was a clear lack of cohesion at times in the backline last campaign despite Spurs’ relatively solid defensive performance across the season.

In an interview with Football Insider, ex-Spurs shot stopper, Robinson, urged the club to sign the stalwart after his impressive performance in Slovakia’s opener.

“You can see that he is a leader. He marshalled that back line and was an example to others. He stood out head and shoulders above the rest,” said Robinson.

“It was not just in a defensive sense either. He was a threat going forward as well. His touch and finish for the goal was incredible. It was like an accomplished striker’s.”

Tottenham's biggest problem this summer will be raising the funds required to sign new players and that will mean getting players out the door for beneficial fees at a time when most clubs are in the same boat.

There are also alternative options available, including the likes of Joachim Andersen , who Tottenham have looked at a number of times in the past. The Dane impressed while on loan in the Premier League with Fulham, and is believed to have enough experience to help marshal Spurs’ defensive fragilities.

But even so, Skriniar would be a statement signing, something Robinson clearly agrees with.

“He is exactly what Spurs need – a world-class centre-half. I would welcome him with open arms to Spurs. What a player.”
