Paulo Fonseca emerges as Celtic Eddie Howe alternative as Parkhead side face Tottenham battle

Paulo Fonseca has been offered the chance to take the reins at Celtic next season, according to the Transfer Window Podcast.

Roma announced on Tuesday that Fonseca will leave the club at the end of the season to be replaced by Jose Mourinho in the summer.

That comes after Roma all-but crashed out of the Europa League following a 6-2 defeat to Manchester United in the semi-final first leg.

It means Fonseca, who has previously managed Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk among others, is on the lookout for a new club.

And it has been claimed on the Transfer Window Podcast that he has been "offered" to Celtic.

He says that a third party has offered his services to Celtic and Mourinho's former club Tottenham, and the two clubs could now face a fight to land the decorated coach.

Eddie Howe remains the clear favourite to take over at Parkhead and could still be announced as manager in the weeks ahead.

But as the situation drags on, Fonseca offers an interesting alternative that may intrigue the Parkhead board.

Duncan Castles has his finger on the pulse when it comes to Italian football.

Back in April, when it was being reported that Maurizio Sarri was the favourite to take over at Roma, he stated Mourinho would get the job.

That flew under the radar at the time but it has since come to pass and it lends weight to his most recent claim - that Fonseca could be arriving at Parkhead in the near future.

The Portuguese boss is renowned for his attacking style of football and previously led Shakhtar to successive league and cup doubles before he joined Roma.

He's enjoyed mixed success in the Italian capital but he took them to the Europa League semi-finals this season after finishing 5th in Serie A last term.

Fonseca's Roma managed to score 77 goals - more than champions Juventus - but have disappointed this time out and face a fight to qualify for Europe next season.

Roma have announced that Fonseca will remain in his post until the end of the season so an announcement on his future may not come until after Serie A concludes on 23 May.
