Lucien Favre has emerged as the favourite to take over at St James' Park following Steve Bruce's departure, per reports.
That's according to BILD journalist Christian Falk who claims that Paulo Fonseca is now 'out of the picture'.
Reports yesterday suggested that Fonseca was ready and waiting to accept the Magpies offer to become the new manager, but it's believed that the new hierarchy were still considering other potential appointments.

The former Braga and AS Roma boss outlined five potential loan targets that could help the Magpies in the short run, something that he believed would set him apart from the other candidates.
However, reports in Germany believe that Favre is the main man to take over at Newcastle, given their interest in Ajax's technical director, Marc Overmars.
Falk believes that the duo would work well together, pushing Paulo Fonseca and Ralf Rangnick out of the picture.
When asked if Favre is the ‘hottest candidate’ for the job, Falk said: “Favre and Overmars would harmonise very well, they know each other in the system.
“Fonseca and Rangnick are currently out of the picture, but they are also candidates.”
Graeme Jones is currently in temporary charge of the Magpies and looks set to take charge of the first team once again this weekend.
The Toon face league leaders Chelsea, who have been revolutionised under Thomas Tuchel. Newcastle will have their work cut out this weekend if they're planning to pick up their first three points of the season.
