Paul Woods: I wanted to end my career at East Kilbride, I'm gutted to be leaving

Paul Woods hoped to end his career at East Kilbride this coming season, and admits he's devastated to instead have been shown the door by manager Stevie Aitken.

The 34-year-old former Stranraer and Queen's Park star says there are no hard feelings and it's just football, but he had high hopes of bowing out after trying to help Kilby win the Lowland League title.

But Woods says he's never felt fitter and hopes another side will take him on this season.

"I thought I had done enough last season, even though it was obviously cut short with Covid and stuff like that, to maybe stay on for another year," he said.

"Getting to my age, I was hoping to maybe finish there at East Kilbride, but the manager is wanting to freshen things up.

"You just need to take it on the chin and get on with it, these things happen.

"I wanted to stay there, I would have stayed, but it's football and these things happen.

"He wants to go with other players, so you can only appreciate it.

"I enjoyed my time there, but it's time to move on."

"I had been there quite a long time.

"I think that was my third season there. It was half a season before, the year they got to the play-offs after I left Queen's Park.

"I went to Stranraer for a season and then back, so that season was my third."

Woods added: "It was a strange season, We were kind of waiting on it being cut short, to be honest, after Christmas and stuff, and there were more important things going on.

"But it was just after beating Kelty and dropping some points; it was a shame we couldn't have topped the league and finished it up there, but Kelty were doing really well and didn't drop anything apart from playing us.

"It was good that they got to go into the play-offs. It's just a shame we couldn't have finished on top of that, but these things happen."

Woods hopes there is a future for him in the game and that someone takes a chance on him.

He said: "I hope to keep playing. I feel as fit as ever.

"I think I've got something - I don't know how much, but I feel like I have something to offer teams and I definitely want to continue.

"With the last two seasons being affected by Covid I want to get back into it as quickly as possible.

"I want to play as long as I can, hopefully I've got another wee bit left.

"I've kept fit and I thought I was going back to East Kilbride, so obviously that has changed a wee bit.

"I'm looking for a team and to see if anybody will take me.

"I'll see what happens and hopefully get something sorted soon enough."
