Paul Wesley’s reaction to Stefan’s fate in ‘The Vampire Diaries’ isn’t one fans agree with

The Vampire Diaries had a dedicated and loyal fanbase. And when one of their favorite characters was killed off, they didn’t really love the twist. But star Paul Wesley has opened up about Stefan’s fate.

Like all good vampire stories, The Vampire Diaries had two different ships for Elena (Nina Dobrev) and while Wesley was a very important part of one as Stefan, he made it clear that he was grateful to have Stefan meet his end when he did. Talking to PEOPLE about his partnership with Hone Health, Wesley took a trip down memory lane and went back to Mystic Falls. There, he revealed his hot take: He’s so glad Stefan died.

“Truthfully — and whenever I say this, people get so angry at me — I am so glad that he died,” Wesley told PEOPLE. “It’s something that I was really pushing for.” So I guess we can blame Wesley. To be fair, he did go on to explain why he thinks Stefan’s death was a good thing and he makes it kind of hard to argue with him. He’s making great points.

Wesley went on to defend himself to PEOPLE, saying “First of all, he had been alive for 160, 170 years, and I was like, ‘This guy’s story has got to come to an end.’ Then secondly, he had done a lot of bad things — even though he was a good guy — he did a lot of bad things.”

Another reason that Wesley is glad Stefan died? The love triangle of it all. “From a superficial perspective, if Damon had died and Stefan had stayed alive and somehow ended up with Elena, I’d have to hear about that from Damon and Elena fans for the rest of my life,” he said. “I was so happy that I was not in that position.” Even better though: He wished that the brothers, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan, died together. “I do think that the two brothers should have probably went out together.”

Paul Wesley doesn’t relate to Stefan though

Everyone who watched The Vampire Diaries had their fave. I was a Stefan girl myself but for Wesley, she said that the character he relates to more is Stefan’s doppelganger, Silas.“I am dry and I have dark humor,” he told the outlet. “It’s not that I’m the villain, but I definitely am someone who looks at things from a different perspective.”

Wesley went on to clarify that with Stefan, he was constantly emotional and didn’t get to share how sarcastic he really is, which fans noticed. “Stefan was never laughing. He was always crying. And so, a lot of times, I’ll do Q&As with fans and things, and they’ll notice that I can be pretty sarcastic. And that is very much a quality of Silas.”

So, if you thought that Wesley would be upset that Stefan died on the show, sorry to disappoint but you have to admit that he makes a really good argument about the arc.
