Paul Warne gives Rotherham United state of play ahead of Bolton Wanderers New Year's Day clash

Paul Warne hopes Rotherham United's New Year's Day clash against Bolton Wanderers goes ahead as he gave a clean bill of health on his Millers side after their loss to Accrington Stanley.

The Millers are poised to host Wanderers at New York Stadium at the start of 2022.

Before then as things stand, Bolton are set to head to Burton Albion on Wednesday evening and Rotherham are set to host Lincoln City.

The fixture list in English football has been hit heavily with postponements owing to Covid-19 outbreaks in squads up and down the country.

Bolton's last two League One clashes against Wycombe Wanderers and Morecambe have been called off after positive coronavirus cases in the Wanderers camp.

Bolton have reopened their Lostock training ground today after a total of 18 positive tests within the squad and football staff, including boss Ian Evatt.

Coupled with Burton's last two games also being called off following positive Covid-19 cases in the Brewers squad, there is naturally a question mark over the clash at the Pirelli Stadium.

Rotherham suffered a 1-0 loss yesterday on the road to Accrington Stanley in one of only a handful of games which took place on Boxing Day.

Speaking ahead of his side's next two games against Lincoln and Bolton, Warne hopes both encounters can go ahead and believes the Millers have tough fixtures in prospect as he hopes his side learn their lessons from the loss to Stanley.

He said: "Yeah hopefully the games go ahead. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow do you, so hopefully that's the case and we can put it right on Wednesday.

"If we play like we did today when we played well, we should be able to put a good performance in, but I said to the lads in the dressing room that there's times where the opposition have the foothold and we probably just need to have a bit more composure on the ball.

"There was a few slashed clearances today and it didn't feel like we had the rub of the green that we've definitely had over recent weeks. We've been winning games and I've never come out and said we've been amazing in them, and pour little bit of lady luck probably ran out today

"We had a great run but we need to get better and w're going to come up against some really tough games that we need to take our chances in.

"Today (vs Accrington) it does feel like a wasted opportunity. We kept the lads healthy and happy and we came here with a strong squad, so there's no injuries or the dreaded Covid in the camp so we're very fortunate, but today we came up against a good Accrington team that maybe played the conditions better than us and took the best chance of the game and fair play to them."
