Paul Townend to return from injury for champion jockey battle with Rachael Blackmore at Punchestown

Paul Townend will return to action at the Punchestown Festival after being booked to ride in the three Grade Ones on Tuesday's card.

Willie Mullins' stable jockey has been sidelined since suffering a foot injury at Fairyhouse on Easter Sunday, but has been passed fit to ride at the Co Kildare meeting.

Mullins said: “Paul rode out yesterday and today. It’s great to have him back.”

Since suffering the injury, Townend's lead in the race to be crowned champion jockey has been cut to four by Rachael Blackmore and the pair will battle it for the title over the five-day meeting.

The Cork jockey's first ride back will come on board Blue Lord in the eCOMM Merchant Solutions Champion Novice Hurdle before he partners Chacun Pour Soi in the William Hill Champion Chase and Monkfish in the Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase.

Townend and Blackmore look set for some epic battles on the opening day, with the Tipperary rider partnering Ryanair winner Allaho against Chacun Pour Soi and Envoi Allen against Monkfish.

Blackmore recorded her best seasonal total of winners with a treble at Kilbeggan on Friday evening.

Speaking on the Grand National-winning jockey's chances of being crowned champion rider, trainer Henry de Bromhead said: "We’ll be trying to do our best and support her the best we can.

“You can all see for yourself (what her strengths are), in the National it was like she could see around corners, she saw dangers before they happened.

“She’s brilliant to work with and knows how hard you have to work to succeed. She gets on with everyone and knows how to ride winners.

“I’ve said it all before, but I think she’s just brilliant – we’re very lucky to have her.”
