Paul Tierney no longer on VAR duty for Liverpool game against Chelsea

Paul Tierney will not be on VAR duty for today's crucial Premier League clash between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Tierney was initially down to part of the officiating team for today's crunch at Stamford Bridge.

It came as a surprise to some fans that Tierney had been placed on duties for this Liverpool match given his recent outing in the middle when Spurs played Liverpool.

The referee was involved in a handful of contentious decisions in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham in December.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp even highlighted after the feisty clash that Tierney has a 'problem' with him.

Speaking to Tierney on the pitch following the final whistle, Klopp said: "I don’t have a problem with referees, only you.

“Anyone who has played football knows you can’t stop there to win a penalty.”

Post match the Liverpool boss said to Sky Sports: "It is always helpful when you play football yourself. When you see the situation back (Diogo Jota’s penalty appeal), the VAR is there. Why is he stopping? I don’t understand.

"The draw is fine. We are not crazy enough to think we cannot draw at Tottenham but these situations are crucial.

“I have no idea what his [referee Paul Tierney] problem is with me."

But instead today, Tierney was the referee for the six-pointer between Leeds United and Burnley.

Early reports suggested the decision was nothing to do with the Spurs vs Liverpool game, and was because someone was required to step in as ref for the game at Elland Road.

Darren England will take charge of VAR for Liverpool's clash with Chelsea.
