Paul Smyth joins Leyton Orient on two-year deal

Northern Ireland international Paul Smyth has joined Leyton Orient on a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old was recently released by Queens Park Rangers following the expiry of his contract at Loftus Road.

He becomes Orient's fourth signing of the summer and will join his new teammates when they kick-off pre-season training next Monday.

“I couldn't resist," Smyth told the EFL League Two club's website.

“We want to get promoted. This is a big club. The way Kenny wants to play is something I want to be a part of.

"Promotion is always your ambition when you join a team and I hope we can do that this year.”

Former Linfield youngster Smyth joined QPR from the Blues in 2017 and went on to score on his debut.

Despite some impressive early appearances, Smyth soon found his first-team opportunities limited and was overlooked by a number of managers at the Championship club.

He ended last season with a second loan spell at Accrington Stanley, and also had loan spells with Charlton and Wycombe.

Smyth has made two appearances for Northern Ireland, scoring on his senior debut against South Korea back in March, 2018.

Orient manager Kenny Jackett highlighted Smyth's pace as being a big asset for Orient next season.

“I think he is a very good signing. At 23, there is potential for him to do very well for our club. I’m delighted he has decided to sign for us," Jackett said.

“His main asset, I think is pace – I like him up front and I like him as a forward. He can score goals and I believe his pace and mobility will give defenders a lot of problems.”
