Paul Smith receives special award in Queen's Honours List 2020

Fashion designer Paul Smith came from very humble beginnings - he first operated out of a tiny shop in Nottingham after leaving school with no qualifications.

His business now has 15 shops in the UK and 200 more worldwide, including in Milan, New York and Tokyo.

Sir Paul has built a fashion empire with a turnover of more than £325 million, synonymous with classic British tailoring and style, but still resides in Nottingham - operating out of a shop at Willoughby House in Low Pavement.

And in 2020, which is the 50th anniversary of his label, the Beeston-born designer has received a special award from the Queen.

He has been named as a Companion of Honour - which recognises major contributions to the arts, science or medicine.

There is a maximum membership of 65 people for this award, meaning a new member can only be added when a previous recipient dies.

A government spokesperson said: "His is a success story of British graft, creativity and entrepreneurialism.

"He left school with no qualifications, and went from humble beginnings in a tiny shop in Nottingham to building the Paul Smith empire which now spans 52 countries."

Sir Paul was born in Beeston in 1946, stumbling into fashion after an accident cut his cycling career short.

His company was founded in 1970, and since then he has received a Knighthood, five British fashion awards and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1991.

In 2002, he even accessorised the England football team for their World Cup matches in Japan and Korea.

He recently designed 'love seats' for Nottingham's Broadway cinema, which were auctioned off for £4,200.

The designer has a mural dedicated to him in his hometown of Beeston.

He is one of 18 people from Nottinghamshire who are included in the Queen's Honours List 2020.
