Paul Simpson targets double figures after opening account against Crossgates

Jeanfield’s busy start to the Premier Division campaign continues on home soil this weekend.

The Perth side’s third game in the space of week will see Whitehill Welfare pitch up at the Riverside.

Midfielder Paul Simpson, who netted the goal on Tuesday evening against Crossgates, is setting his sights high.

He believes Swifts can push for the title in a league where no victory is handed to you on a plate.

That will again be the case on Saturday and Simpson said: “This is the strongest the league has looked since we came into the East of Scotland League.

“There’s not really one game where you look at it as an easy game. But we see ourselves as pushing for the title this year and we want to win something.”

Simpson is keen to build on his first goal of the new season.

Reflecting on Tuesday’s game, he said: “I thought the boys were brilliant.

“We knew what kind of game it was going to be and the game was very similar to the last time we played them midweek at the Riverside.

“We knew that they’d make it a hard game for us and compete for everything. I feel very unlucky we didn’t come away with the three points.

“We just didn’t seem to get a break.

“For me, it’s always nice to get on the scoresheet. It’s something I didn’t do very much of last season and was disappointed.

“I’ll definitely be pushing myself to get double figures this season.”

Manager Ross Gunnion expects to come up against a well-drilled Whitehill Welfare on Saturday.

“Our focus now changes to Saturday and Whitehill Welfare,” he said.

“They struggled last season but have brought in Neil Janczyk as manager who I know well from playing against over the years. He is vastly experienced and will have them performing to a much higher level.

“So we’re expecting a well-drilled team who’ll be tough to break down but be a threat in an attacking sense as well.

“We need to set ourselves the task of winning our home games.”
