Paul Scholes will always have "question marks" over Man Utd defender after Everton draw

Paul Scholes has joined Gary Neville in claiming Manchester United’s central defenders are not good enough to win a Premier League title.

Neville has long advocated for the signing of another centre-back to partner captain Harry Maguire.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided against that in both the summer and January, instead sticking with the players currently at his disposal.

Victor Lindelof started in the heart of defence against Everton, where their deficiencies at the back were clear to see again.

Solskjaer’s side conceded three times to the Toffees, including a last gasp equaliser in the thrilling six goal draw at Old Trafford.

Lindelof and Maguire struggled with the pace of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and were exposed when the visitors played balls beyond them.

And Scholes has said there has always been question marks hanging over Lindelof, who he believes, doesn’t have the pace to be a long term option for United.

“Their defence has just not been good enough,” Scholes said, following the draw. “It’s hard to put your finger on it as well because you look individually and they’re okay. Maguire is a good defender.

“I still have question marks against Lindelof. I always will.

“I don’t think he’s quick enough to play alongside Maguire, I don’t think he’s aggressive enough.”

Scholes’ former teammate Neville saw the same problems and claimed he learned nothing new about the defence against Everton.

He told Sky Sports: "They’ve played poorly and won games through attacking moments, but they played really well but they’ve lost points through poor defensive moments.

"David de Gea, there at the end, he doesn’t even come out in line with the ball. I think you want your goalkeeper to come out and eat the striker, you just want your goalkeeper to come out and absolutely take him out, goalkeepers are so quick off their lines nowadays.

"It wasn’t a great night for the goalkeepers, it wasn’t a great night for the centre-backs either. We’ve known obviously from the start of the season that United needed a stronger centre-back pairing, that hasn’t changed and it’s cost them."
