Paul Scholes urges Manchester United to appoint 'long-term manager' to fix 'big problems'

Paul Scholes has claimed it’s vital that Manchester United get their next managerial appointment right.

United will be seeking a fourth permanent boss since Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of 2012/13 season, after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday.

Michael Carrick was placed in temporary charge following the Norwegian's dismissal, and led the Red Devils to a crucial 2-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho ensured the club’s passage through to the last-16 of the competition.

However, In the wake of Solskjaer’s dismissal United stated their desire to bring in an interim manager until the end of the season, but Scholes has implored his former club not to opt for a short-term solution.

“Man United need a long-term manager to build because they have big problems," he told BT Sport.

“You're telling me Conte couldn’t come in and get them anywhere near Liverpool and Manchester City?

“I don't see it. It will take a couple of years again, which isn't something we want to talk about, to get the squad right and the way of playing right to compete with those two clubs.

“I think there's a lot of quality, but it still feels like we're short of players. We've said this for four or five years. But if they bring a proper coach in, can a new coach bring the best out of these players?”

Scholes also criticised United’s recent transfer policy, which has left the club with 36-year-old Ronaldo as the main focal point of the side and failed to address glaring issues in the middle of the park.

He added: “Recruitment-wise, if you're relying on your striker who's 36 (years old), I worry. I think they need a midfielder when it comes to controlling the game they need to see runs.
