Paul Scholes tells Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the two transfers Manchester United need to make

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the two positions he needs to strengthen to close the gap on Manchester City next season.

United were City 's closest competitors in the Premier League this season but still finished 12 points behind Pep Guardiola's side.

Signings are on the cards this summer for United as they look to strengthen their ranks, with a host of players already touted to make the move to Old Trafford.

Scholes has now made it clear where United need to focus their business, naming three potential targets for Solskjaer 's side.

"I think we need someone who is a creative midfield player. Jack Grealish or Jadon Sancho, one of them would be ideal," he told the Webby and O'Neill show on YouTube.

"It would be great to have a left-footed centre back but I don’t think it’s needed, I don’t think we are desperate for that. I would like to see a centre-half come in next to Maguire. I think Lindelof is doing alright, I just think alright isn’t good enough to win a league.

"Marquinhos from PSG, I think he’s be a brilliant centre-half next to Maguire but again you’re talking about a lot of money."

United failed to secure a move for England international Sancho last year but a transfer may be on the cards this summer, with Borussia Dortmund focusing their attention on retaining Erling Haaland.

Aston Villa captain Grealish has excelled at Villa Park and is tied down to a long-term deal with his boyhood club, which would significantly raise any transfer fee required for his services.

Meanwhile, Marquinhos has three-years remaining on his deal in the French capital and would be another player with a hefty asking price.
