Paul Scholes tells Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the players to sign at Manchester United

Tuesday marks exactly 100 days until the transfer window comes to a close and Paul Scholes has outlined where he thinks Manchester United need to strengthen.

With the club sitting in sixth in the Premier League and a number of players expected to depart in the summer, there's expected to be a big overhaul at Old Trafford once the window opens.

While a centre-back has been at the top of the United's list of transfer priorities for a while now, United legend Scholes believes the club should also be targeting a right-back and a forward.

"I think it’s a confusing club and a confusing squad of players at the minute,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

“I always think at Manchester United and at big clubs, you’re only as good as your centre forwards are and your attacking players. I’m not sure whether these attacking players are good enough.

Every Manchester United signing since Sir Alex Ferguson rated

“We talk about potential with [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford, but you’re getting to a point now where it’s not potential, you have to start producing week in, week out."

Lukaku is being linked with a move to Italy and the Belgium international did nothing to dispel those reports after the draw against Chelsea, admitting he 'doesn't know' if he'll be at the club next season.

Scholes isn't convinced that the former Everton man is of the requisite quality to play for United.

“Lukaku. I’m not sure if he’s a top class centre forward that’s going to score you 30 goals to win you a league," Scholes added. "There’s confusion with the forwards.

"When I played we had four centre-forwards, who were brilliant, and they were centre forwards. You look now and you’ve got Lukaku, who’s definitely a centre-forward, but then you’ve got Martial, Rashford, [Alexis] Sanchez. Are they centre-forwards? Are they wide players?

“There’s confusion all over the pitch. A lack of identity."

United also need to strengthen at the back and Scholes believes two defenders are a must when the transfer window opens on May 16.

“If [Victor] Lindelof can get a tough and aggressive defender next to him, I think they’ll be okay," he added.

“They definitely need a right back. Ashley Young has done well, converted from a winger. He’s struggled in the last few weeks but mainly he’s been alright over the last few years.”
