Paul Scholes slams Man Utd idea of appointing Rio Ferdinand to new transfer role

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United are not going to solve any of their current problems with the proposed idea to appoint a sporting director.

His ex-teammate Rio Ferdinand is one of a number of candidates to join the club in a technical role as United look to restructure after their disappointing season.

But Scholes is of the opinion that rather than changes at board level United simply need to sign better players if they are going to compete for trophies next year.

He said: "It seems like a waste of time to be honest with you. I don't understand why clubs need a director of football.

Rio Ferdinand has 'already told Man Utd' to make one transfer signing this summer

"If you've got a manager, he's the one who buys the players.

"He's got a chief scout, obviously, who recommends players and he watches them and then buys them.

"A director of football role, for me, isn't needed. It's just creating jobs around clubs that aren't necessary."

Scholes thinks Solskjaer has a big job to do over the summer, and believes up to six signings may be necessary for United in order for them to move forward.

Man Utd transfer news: Brighton want Juan Mata if he leaves Old Trafford on a free

"Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his chief scout, over the next six weeks, would be best to move in together and nail down everything they want, watching videos, watching games, finding out what positions they need to improve, getting to know each other really well," he said.

"He needs five or six big players, he knows that, he's not stupid and hopefully he can improve the squad."

United have been linked with a whole host of top players in the last few weeks, and it is likely to be an interesting summer at Old Trafford.

Much may depend on whether they can qualify for the Champions League. They face relegated Huddersfield and Cardiff in their final two games as they look to claim one of the two available spots ahead of Tottenham , Chelsea and Arsenal .
