Paul Scholes sends Manchester United transfer message as he identifies weakness

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has suggested that the Reds must sign more midfield talent in the January transfer window.

United move within a point of the Champions League spots thanks to an impressive 2-0 win at Burnley on Saturday evening but Scholes was discussing the issues still present in the squad ahead of the contest.

Whilst United have produced some big wins this term against the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea, defeats such as at Watford earlier this month have highlighted the clear inconsistency still remaining at the club.

The Reds took a huge step forward in that regard by defeating Burnley in a controlled performance at Turf Moor but Scholes said before the game that a lack of quality is still holding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men back.

"You can talk about age and lack of experience but I don't think that is a problem," Scholes told BT Sport.

"I think there is enough experience in the team, I just don't think that the quality is quite there, especially without someone like Paul Pogba.

"The front three excite me and they are as good as any team in the league or any team in Europe.

"It's just in behind that worries me. We know the quality that Pogba has. There is no better midfield player in the world but everything else around that doesn't feel quite good enough."
