Manchester United favourite Paul Scholes has named RB Leipzig defender Manchester United as the ideal player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.
The French defender is a key part of the Bundesliga leaders' team and his form since he established himself as a first-team regular has alerted a number of top clubs.
United scouted centre-back Upamecano, 22, when he was a teenager but decided against moving for the France international, who was heavily linked with a summer move to Old Trafford. Upamecano is contracted to Leipzig until 2023 but has a reputed €42million release clause and is expected to leave next year.
According to Scholes, that's a transfer that United should consider as he believes Upamecano offers something different to the current crop at Old Trafford.
“This is the type of defender I think United need, he’s very different to Maguire and Lindelof," Scholes declared to BT Sport. "He absolutely loves one-on-ones, he loves getting down that channel because he knows he’s gonna beat them. It’s very much the same as what Rio used to do, what Jaap Stam used to do.
"It frees the rest of the team to worry about attacking play, because you know you’ve got a centre-half who is going to defend and he’ll do it all day.”
