Paul Scholes says Man Utd need new signing to 'cover Harry Maguire weaknesses'

Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to sign another central defender to help make up for Harry Maguire's shortcomings.

The Red Devils were dumped out of the Europa League by Sevilla in a defeat that laid bare their deficiencies in attack and defence.

Maguire and his United back four could've done more to stop both the goals that saw them fall to a 2-1 defeat.

Luuk de Jong's winner especially bought about an angry reaction from Bruno Fernandes who felt as if it could've been prevented.

And Scholes feels as if the Old Trafford chiefs need another star to go alongside their £75m signing.

"I think they could do with a centre half, I've said that all along," he said.

"I'm not sure Lindelof going to be good enough as a partner for Maguire. I think they need a dominant defender next to him.

"Defensively, the full backs are OK. On the ball you'd have to question but defensively they're OK.

"I think the defensive record over the last 15, 20 games has been very good, probably one of the best in the league so you have to take that into respect as well.

"But I still think a dominant centre-half next to Maguire, just to cover for the slight weaknesses he has."

Did Man Utd deserve to lose their semi-final? Have your say below

Maguire, who was given the United armband this season, has been a regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But the former Leicester man bemoaned their lack of cutting edge as they lost a third semi-final clash this year.

"The best team lost. They punished us for missing chances. We conceded from two crosses which is not good enough," he said.

"We worked our socks off and deserved to win and get through. We fell short in a semi-final for the third time this year.

"Perhaps that bit of inexperience cost us - we shouldn't have conceded that second goal."
