Paul Scholes reveals 'brilliant' winger who turned down Manchester United for Liverpool

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has revealed how Harry Kewell rejected his former club to move to Liverpool back in 2003.

Kewell signed for the Reds almost 17 years ago after an impressive seven-year spell at Leeds United.

The former Australia winger went on to play over a century of games under Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez.

Scholes revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was an admirer of Kewell and wanted to take the left-footed winger to Old Trafford.

“I always remember two or three who were coming. I remember Harry Kewell was one and you knew what a good player he was,” Scholes said on Savage Social.

“He was brilliant. I think he ended up turning us down and going to Liverpool which didn’t really bother us that much.

“I think Damien Duff at the time was another one. Arjen Robben, I think he was very close to coming.

“As a midfield player you look forward to playing with quick players who can run with the ball and score you goals.

“But I think the one that stands out is Ronaldinho. I really thought the manager got him.”

Kewell was part of the famous Liverpool side that won the club’s fifth Champions League in Istanbul in 2005.

However, the now-41-year-old was substituted after picking up an injury, being replaced by eventual goalscorer Vladimir Šmicer.

Kewell’s time at Anfield was riddled by a series of injuries and he left the club in 2008 to join Turkish side Galatasaray.
