Paul Scholes responds to question on whether Newcastle United should sack Steve Bruce

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has backed Steve Bruce to stay calm despite Newcastle United being involved in a relegation fight.

The Magpies are just three points ahead of 18th-place Fulham in the Premier League table following their 3-1 defeat to Man United at Old Trafford.

It was a solid performance from Bruce 's side, who went a goal down at the 30-minute mark through Marcus Rashford's powerful strike.

However, just six minutes later, a fine finish from Allan Saint-Maximin levelled the game in Manchester and it was exactly what Newcastle deserved.

The hosts went back in front, though, after half-time when Daniel James found himself unmarked in the box and struck it past Karl Darlow.

Joe Willock fouled Rashford inside the box on 74 minutes and the home side were awarded a penalty, with Bruno Fernandes making no mistake from the spot.

The result means the Magpies are still under immense pressure from the Cottagers - who have shown some decent form in recent weeks.

Some Newcastle supporters have called on Bruce to be sacked at various points this season, but Scholes told BT Sport before the game at Old Trafford that the experienced coach will keep them in the top-flight.

The ex-Man United midfielder said: “It’s very hard to say. One thing you have to say about Brucey is that he has great experience, I think this is something like his 850th game or something, so he’s been in this situation before, I don’t think he’ll panic.

"I think he’s got a team that should be okay, but without Callum Wilson, he’s going to be a big miss for them for the next six, eight weeks, whatever, but I think he’s brought some good energy into the team with Joe Willock from Arsenal - I think he’s a good player.

"(Allan) Saint-Maximin can create goals, (Miguel) Almiron can, (Jonjo) Shelvey can play as well, so they’ve got players that I think will get them out of trouble, but they’re going to have to be careful and start winning games soon.

Newcastle now have around five days to prepare for their next Premier League clash, as they welcome Wolves to St James' Park, before they make the trip to fellow strugglers West Bromwich Albion the following week.

Meanwhile, Fulham travel to Crystal Palace next Sunday before they face Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage a few days later for back-to-back London derbies.
