Paul Scholes recalls the day Sir Alex Ferguson 'went absolutely ballistic' with him at Newcastle

Paul Scholes has opened up on the day former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson 'went absolutely ballistic' with him at St James' Park.

In 2001/02, Scholes was part of the great Manchester United side who were downed 4-3 by Sir Bobby Robson's Newcastle at St James' Park.

The seven-goal thriller is one of the all-time classic matches in Premier League history and is best remembered for the flashpoint between Roy Keane and Alan Shearer that resulted in the Red Devils skipper being shown a red card.

But, surprisingly, it wasn't Keane who faced the 'hairdryer treatment' from Sir Alex Ferguson in the changing room at full-time.

Instead, it was Scholes who, despite his impact from the bench helping Manchester United level the game at 3-3, was lambasted by Ferguson for his role in the build-up to Shearer's dramatic winning goal.

Alan Shearer hilariously recalls his on-field spat with Roy Keane

"I didn't really like a b********g, to be honest with you," he told the Robbie Fowler podcast.

"Some do but I had a few. Some lads would say I didn't have any but I did have a few.

"I remember one at Newcastle and Newcastle were a really good team at the time. He left me out and I think we were 3-1 down and he brought me one with 20 minutes to go.

"We got it back to 3-3 and I am not saying it was anything to do with me but I made two chances and we scored two goals!

"Anyway, we are absolutely flying, creating chances and I tried a backflick on the halfway line and gave the ball away. They broke away and Shearer scored to make it 4-3.

"In the dressing room, I am walking in thinking: 'I've made a bit of a d**k of myself but I have made a couple of chances, probably should have scored and I did OK'.

"And he just went absolutely ballistic with me.

"'You'll never play for this club again,' and all that kind of stuff just because I had made that mistake on the half way line and I was never, ever one to answer back.

"People like Giggsy always answered back, Incey would always have a say and even Becks would say something back but I would never say anything back.

"But I just kept saying 'b******s'. He would be saying: 'You've had a f****g nightmare' and I kept saying 'b******s' to him.

"What was I doing? I was frightened to death of the man and never said a word to him but here I was just saying 'b******s' to him.

"I am sat on the coach thinking: 'This is it, I best look for another club here'.

"Monday morning he comes over and I think he is going to fine me two weeks wages but he said: 'I'm sorry. I do realise you made a difference in the game and what happened towards the end and after the game was a bit of an overreaction.'

"That was the quality of the manager. If he thought he had made a mistake he would quickly rectify it but obviously he didn't make many mistakes."
