Paul Scholes questions Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tactic during Manchester United draw with Southampton

Paul Scholes believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a wrong decision in taking off Juan Mata during Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The cultured Spaniard was given his first start in the league this season at St Mary's but was hauled off after 68 minutes and replaced by Nemanja Matic.

Having seen Daniel James' opener cancelled out by Jan Vestergaard's header, the Red Devils were searching for an equaliser when Solskjaer made the tactical switch.

United struggled to create any clear opening in the final 25 minutes and left the south coast with just a point.

Having hit four goals past Chelsea on the opening day of the season, United have only scored three goals in their last three games against Wolves, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Former United and England midfielder Scholes believes that Solskajer made the wrong change on Saturday and should have left Mata on the field.

He also lamented a few of United's senior players who gave the ball away too cheaply, in his eyes.

"I am disappointed," Scholes explained.

"It looked like from when the moment Juan Mata went off, actually. I was surprised because I thought if anybody is going to create something it's Juan Mata.

"But it wasn't the young players I was disappointed with, it was more the experienced players.

"When Matic came on he constantly gave the ball away, Ashley Young gave the ball away, and I don't know how many times Paul Pogba lost possession.

"These are the people that young players are looking up to, the examples you're looking at."

Scholes is not the first pundit or former players that have questioned United's more senior players.

The team's most promising performances have come from the likes of James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this season, with more demanded from the likes of Jesse Lingard, Pogba and David de Gea.
