Paul Scholes names one Manchester United worry he has with new Ole Gunnar Solskjaer contract

Paul Scholes says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves a new contract at Manchester United but admits the side's lack of trophies is starting to become a concern.

Solskjaer is out of contract at the end of next season but recent reports have claimed United are set to offer the manager a new deal sooner rather than later.

Speaking on Webby & O'Neill, Scholes said the progress shown by United under Solskjaer meant the manager is deserving of a new contract.

He said: "I think he probably deserves it. There’s been progress from the manager before.

"I think the team looks a lot better, it’s much more exciting, there’s goals in the team – which you always expect from a United team, anyway."

Yet the Old Trafford legend says that United's track record of losing knockout matches under Solskjaer is starting to become a concern.

The Reds exited the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League at the semi-final stage last season, also being knocked out of the League Cup in the semis this season.

Prior to the international break, they suffered a disappointing defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final in a game that saw Bruno Fernandes start on the bench due to his midweek exploits in the Europa League against AC Milan.

Scholes admits the semi-final track record is concerning and says United are not yet in a position to be able to rest their big players for important matches.

He said: "I think the only problem is: win something. Losing four semi-finals is a little bit of a worry I suppose.

"Losing the quarter-final to Leicester, it wasn’t good. For fans especially, the Europa League was tough in Milan, I thought players looked a little bit jaded – Fernandes especially.

"He probably did need the rest against Leicester, but on the other hand, I don’t think United are in a position to rest people for the big games."
