Paul Scholes names improvement Marcus Rashford needs to make at Manchester United

Paul Scholes says Marcus Rashford needs to develop a ruthless streak in front of goal to move to the next level for Manchester United.

The 23-year-old spurned two first-half chances in United's Europa League 4-0 win against Real Sociedad, with goalkeeper Alex Remiro pulling off two good saves to deny the forward. However, the England international did manage to get himself on the scoresheet in the second half as he slid the ball past Remiro following a fine pass from Fred.

Rashford now has 17 goals to his name for the Reds this season but has mainly played from a wide position rather than leading the line, and Scholes believes it is due to a lack of clinical ability in front of goal.

Speaking at half-time on BT Sport, Scholes said it is an area Rashford needs to work on if his desire is to play up front.

He said: "The goalkeeper’s made some really good saves but Marcus will be disappointed, really.

"I think he does need to be more ruthless. He’s got that ruthlessness missing from his game, which is probably why he doesn’t play centre-forward more, as he’d probably like to.

"He’s always playing in the wide areas because he probably lacks that real devilness to go and score a goal."

Speaking at full-time, though, after seeing Rashford find the net in Turin, Scholes noted that the position of cutting in on his right foot from the left-hand side is the one area where you'd fancy the forward to score.

He added: “Yeah, he’ll be really pleased. He’d be disappointed in the first-half with a couple of finishes and he’s not had a great run of form in front of goal.

"It's a great pass from Fred actually, great weight of pass, this is the position where Marcus is at his best - that inside left, coming in and cutting in on goal.

"You fancied him all day just to open up and slide the ball into that bottom corner.”
